Mixtape June 2017

As I compiled the June playlist of 20 tracks I had to cull almost half of the potential tracks which means this month is a strong selection of new music.  I've had to save a few weird and wonderful cover versions back for leaner months.

This month sees the return of The Wedding Present, The National, Muse and Black Grape.

1) Everybody's Hero by Sampa The Great - The Great is now understating Sampa's talent.

2) Colder Than Ice by Pond - An icy cut from their new album featuring a retro photo of Perth's Hay Street Mall as the album cover art.  Retro saxophones sneaking in during the fade out.

3) Northern Ireland by The Wedding Present - taken from the Home Internationals EP which also includes tracks named England, Scotland and Wales.  A mostly instrumental affair with vintage soundbites of football fans.

4) The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness by The National is the first epic single ahead of a new album called Sleep Well Beast.

5) On Paper by Descendants - Short, punky and funny track from a band who survived the 1980s.

6) Dancing In The Breeze by Gentlemen's Dub Club - What a great band name I would like to apply for membership.  A new album called Dubtopia is out now on all good streaming services.

7) Charm Assault by Ride is another teaser for their first album in 21 years.  Makes me want to grown a fringe and shuffle about staring at my daisy roots.

8) What Is Mine? by The Shimmer Band Why is this band not bigger?  I'm still waiting for their debut album to be released.

9) Bless This Acid House by Kasabian - Rock N Roll from my favourite album of the year so far.

10) Pop Voodoo by Black Grape - Awesome new track from Shaun Ryder's reformed Black Grape.

11) Let's Go Together by The Charlatans - Taken off the Different Day album released this week.

12) Never Let Me Go by Green Buzzard - Scuzzy pop band from Melbourne

13) Blossom by Milky Chance - German folk pop band have released their second album, also called Blossom and continue their ascendancy to worldwide superstardom.

14) Forever Watching The Skies by Chemtrails - Excellent lo-fi pop band from London.

15) Ti Amo by Phoenix - French band who have now dropped two giddy singles off their forthcoming album due out on 9th June.

16) Kids Are Cool by San Cisco - Freo band who have grown funky got stylish and play feelgood escapist music.

17) Adeline by alt-j Third album due out this month proceeded by this haunting soundscape.

18) Dig Down by Muse - Who do they remind me of?  Is it Queen?

19) Will Of The Devil by Moon Duo - This is some American Gothic Krautrock that got stuck in my head , may it do so to you as well.

20) Heard You're Moving by Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - Finishing on a high are Melbourne's Rolling Coastal CF with some punky jangle pop released on the suitably cool Sub Pop label.

Mixtape May 2017

Back in 1995 the rivalry between Blur and Oasis had descended into the gutter and their less savory insults were fodder for tabloid headlines.  Damon Alban and Noel Gallagher were two of the most talented songwriters of the era and the passage of time has resulted in a friendship and now a musical collaboration that makes you proud for the good nature of the humanz spirit.

However, Liam Gallagher still needs the publicity in 2017 so he has branded Damon a "Gobshite" and called his brother  a "Massive Girl".  Hopefully more examples of Liam's legendary wit will grace the output of his solo career if he can still write any decent songs with his grazed knuckles...

1) Feels Like Summer by Weezer - These guys don't rest for long.  Weezer are becoming as prolific as King Gizz & The Liz Wiz  and are in danger of running out of colours to name their albums.

2) Cave by Future Islands - American band who penned "Seasons (Waiting For You)" have returned with their fifth album of synth-pop.

3) Paint Me Silver by Pond - Perth band drop a new dreamy tripped out pop song.

4) Are You Looking For Action? by Kasabian - three tracks released so far ahead of their new album. I'm a sucker for euphoric eight minute indie/dance hits that go all Flowered Up at the end.

5) Ever Rizing Dub by Nattali Rize - Reggae Revival track from her Rebel Frequency album.

6) Dream In/Out by Green Buzzard - Indie Rockers from New South Wales who have just released a  ripper new album "Space Man Rodeo".

7) Dependent On Mary by Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - Another Perth band getting better and better.

8) Love That I'm In by The Allergies featuring Andy Cooper - Infectious old school hip hop/funk from Bristol.

9) We Got The Power by Gorillaz featuring Jehnny Beth - Noel and Damon finally make a record together.  New album Humanz is out now.

10) Superdub by Hollie Cook - Hollie is the daughter of the Sex Pistols drummer and a Culture Club backing singer.  This is the B-side dub version of her latest single.

11) J-Boy by Phoenix - Fresh music from these French indie rockers

12) In Cold Blood by alt-J - A cut from their third album due this June.

13) Cocoa Liquor by Alice Jemima - Taken from the eponymous debut album from this talented singer/songwriter from Devon.

14) Plastic Machinery by The Charlatans - 13th album "Different Days" is released on 26th May.

15) Battle Cry by Jack White - A grungy bluesy instrumental

16) Lights Out by Royal Blood - Brighton Rock

17) After The Moon by Real Estate - I fell asleep with my headphones in and awoke from a dream to this song.  Very chilled.

18) Porcelain by Moby (Pola & Bryson Remix) Classic Moby track from Play given a dnb treatment.

19) All I Want by Ride - Ride discover samplers in an attempt to update their sound.  Not sure...

20) Vacant Lot by The Growlers  - This awesome Californian band had their last album was produced by Julian Casablancas of The Strokes.
