Albums of 2024

Welcome to my tenth annual blog picking my albums of the year.  We have reached the halfway point of the decade which has seen the release of such great music from the independent scene. There were loads of  great albums from the bigger / more established acts that are worth a mention and a respectful nod - The Cure, Ride, JAMC, Cast, E.M.F., James, The Black Crowes, Beth Gibbons, Bill Ryder Jones, Paul Molloy, Michael Head, The Lemon Twigs, Empire Of The Sun, Liam Bailey, Fontaines D.C. and Shed Seven’s two number one albums.

But on my tenth annual Album Of The Year blog I will focus on the best albums from the underground scene.  All albums mentioned below are worth investing your time and money in and the ranking order is entirely my own opinion at this point in time.  Read on to find out which albums I've rated as the best of 2024.   And why not put on the embedded spotify or apple playlist whilst you read on featuring one track from each album.

#30 The Filthy Honey - The Filthy Honey

The Filthy Honey is something of an enigma wrapped in a mask - his name is Phill Honey from Oxford and this is his debut album. Electro pop/rock with intelligent lyrics and with 10 songs delivered in 29 minutes and it's a half hour well spent. Favourite songs are the opening trio Those Empty Words, Shoots You Sir!, and  The State Of Me.

Social links: None I could find

Bandcamp: THE FILTHY HONEY | Quickfix Recordings (bandcamp.com)

#29 Lossline - Lossline

The third album from Manchester's Lossline is another collection of brilliant songs that generally start slow and quiet, build up and then get world weary again all within the traditional limits of a  three minute pop song.  Jen Dixon add her vocals to a duet on the bedsit lament of Prepopulated Page.  My favourites are the trio of singles released on bandcamp, Date Night, I Can't See Past Monday, and Again - which has some of the greatest guitar riffs of the year.

Bandcamp: Music | Lossline (The album isn't available on bandcamp but can be found on the streams).

#28 The Howlers - What You've Got To Lose To Win It All

The Howlers' independent debut album made number 15 in the UK official charts and contains an impressive number of hit songs.  Creating a imaginary world of South of the border indie desert rock to play in, The London band sure have some fun with the concept and I love the inclusion of the mariarchi band trumpets.  My favourite songs are El Dorado, Nothing To Lose, and Take It Easy.

Bandcamp: What You've Got To Lose To Win It All | The Howlers (bandcamp.com)

#27 The Wesleys - The Wesleys

From Montreal, Quebec come a band known as The Wesleys who appeared on my radar when they released this groovy rock n roll record. The album harks back to the garage rock sound of The Strokes and the sharp guitars cut through the fuzzy feedback.  There are nine great indie pop songs here and the whole album wraps up in 31 minutes leaving you wanting more.  So play it again!  Favourite songs are A Lot To Lose, Make It My Way and Better Believe It.

Social links Linktree

Bandcamp: The Wesleys | The Wesleys (bandcamp.com)

#26 Quivers - Oyster Cuts

The Australian band Quivers never disappoint.  There's a mix of musical sytles on the Oyster Cuts album. But whether it's jangly guitars, new wave electro, grunge or a piano ballad there are always wonderful harmonies.   My favourites are Never Be Lonely, Apparition and Fake Flowers.

Bandcamp: Oyster Cuts | Quivers (bandcamp.com)

#25 Specky Cult - A Different Kind Of Difficult

Second album from North East band is full of wise words and daftness from aging punks with an ear for a catchy chorus.  My favourites are the internet overload of Pull The Plug, A Different Kind Of Difficult, and Big Shop which is fun to play when navigating supermarket aisles with your trolley.

Social links (if you can't pull the plug): Twitter  Instagram  Facebook  Bluesky

#24 Wilding - Whatever I Am

As I recall this album was made by a British man who now lives in Melbourne, Australia.  The musical  influences are Blur circa Modern Life is Rubbish and Ian Dury and the Blockheads on opening track I Am.  There are plenty of brilliant songs that will put a smile on your faceas you are transported back to the early Britpop days. My favourite songs here are He's Got Such Nasty Habits, Logical Steve and Here Comes Badger Jones.

Bandcamp: Whatever I Am | Wilding | Half A Cow Records (bandcamp.com)

#23 The Spase - Sleeplessness

The Widnes band are a trio of lifelong friends and they have released a wonderful third album in Sleeplessness.  This is indie rock with half an eye on pop music.  The song Sorry has the heartfelt vibe of a lost 1998 Manic Street Preachers covering R.E.M.  I can also hear influences from The La's, The Beatles, and a healthuy dollop of Britpop.  Favourite songs are Glue, Sorry, and We Are What We Say Yes To.

Social links Linktree  Bluesky

Bandcamp Sleeplessness | The Spase (bandcamp.com)

#22 Super 8 - Retro Metro

Super 8 tuned in and dropped out to the 1960's and The Beatles for inspiration on this album. Help era jangle, backbeats, harmonica solos, and super furry harmonies are the order of the day. Trip also gave me a rare interview on the DAFT POM SHOW MAY 2024  Favourite songs here include Keep Doing It (covered in Japenese on his latest EP), Take It From Me, and  Every Word Is True.

Social links Linktree  Bluesky

Bandcamp: Retro Metro | SUPER 8 (bandcamp.com)

#21 The Umbrellas - Fairweather Friend

A San Francisco jangle pop band with dual male and female vocals, the occassional distortion pedal and very tight drumming. Fairweather Friend is their second album, ten short songs that leave you with a C86 smile on your face.  Favourite songs Toe The Line, Gone, and P.M.

Social links Linktree

#20 Black Sonic Revolver - For Those In The Know

Growling and sneering Velvet Underground/BRMC style rock n roll from Manchester.  For Those In The Know was released in August and has been on high rotation ever since in my headphones.  Favourite songs include Thrill Of The Chase, Same As Yesterday, and album closer Another Way

Social links Twitter  Instagram  Facebook  Bluesky

#19 Solar Eyes - Solar Eyes

A great album of grungy psychadelic glam rock songs from a Birmingham duo. It's like the JAMC wrote a space opera  whilst off their nuts.  Favourite songs include Alcatraz, Deep Trip, and the spacetti western Dreaming Of The Moon.

Social links: Linktree

Bandcamp: Solar Eyes | Solar Eyes (bandcamp.com)

#18 The Junior League - Our Broadcast Day

Fans of 80's R.E.M. will enjoy this fine collection of mature songs from Louisiana artist The Junior League. My favourite tracks are 1973 Nervous Breakdown, Let’s Hear It For The Dead & The Whisky Talking. Singer songwriter Joe Adragna has been releasing albums as the The Junior League since 2006 and Our Broadcast Day is at least his ninth album so there's plenty more to investigate if this catches your ear.

Bandcamp: Our Broadcast Day | The Junior League (bandcamp.com)

#17 The Nature Strip - Domesticated Beast

The Sydney band's fourth power pop album is a blast of fresh air in a stuffy world.  The Nature Strip are planning to release this album on vinyl in early 2025 so keep an eye out for that release.  For now it's on the streams and available digitally via Bandcamp.  My favourite songs here are I Cannot Deny You, Wavelength, and Sixth Sense.

Bandcamp: Domesticated Beast | The Nature Strip

#16 Chime School - The Boy Who Ran The Paisley Hotel

The second album from California's Chime School evokes memories of late eighties and early nineties janglepop especially Teenage Fanclub.  Whether happy or sad the songs are all warmly recieved and this is a gorgeous record with great songwriting and many a twelve-string guitar.  Favourite songs include Give Your Heart Away, Wandering Song, and Desperate Days.

Social links Linktree  Bluesky

Bandcamp: The Boy Who Ran The Paisley Hotel | Chime School (bandcamp.com)

#15 Laurie Wright - We're Only Warming Up

Laurie Wright's second album kicks open the doors with a barnstorming folk punk rock anthem in the album's title.  It's a statement of intent from the talented busking rock star and this album has improved on last year's debut Get On The End Of It.  Several lyrics deal with Laurie's past experience of addiction and how he has overcome them with defiant songs.  Favourite songs I'd Rather Be The Passenger, Who's Laughing Now, and It Was All Part Of The Plan.

Social links Twitter  Instagram  Facebook

Website: Laurie Wright | Welcome

#14  Lyon Tide - Asides

Opening with a crack of thunder and an acoustic guitar - Yesterday's Storm is a wonderful introduction to the third Lyon Tide album.  It's been two years between the albums but many of the songs have been released as singles over the last twelve months and are now reunited on a strong collection of songs about love and losses.  The piano ballad Justify builds to an orchestrtrated finale and then sevaral more robust guitar driven indie pop songs appear.  This album arrived in November and at the time of writing my favourite songs are You Are My Movie, Clinging To Satellites and Life Support Machine.  But each song has its merits and a summer-time vibe - which is timely for those of us in the southern hemisphere.

Bandcamp: Asides | Lyon Tide

#13 Feverjaw - These Times Of Trouble

Feverjaw's second album arrived three years after their debut All Bets Are Off  and it is introduced by the ominous rock of This Will End In Blood. Singles Out of Havoc and Never More Than Now are both classic catchy Feverjaw grunge pop and contain the influences from the early Manics, Pixies and Smashing Pumpkins.  Elsewhere Feverjaw use acoustic instruments, a cello, and my favourite song is where they explore the sonic boundaries telling a story in a 9 minute, multi-part song called In Ritual Clockwork.  It's their Paranoid Android or Bohemian Rhapsody moment.

Bandcamp: These Times Of Trouble | Feverjaw (bandcamp.com)

#12  Joe Adhemar - Two Magpie Day

The 6th album from singer / songwriter & producer Joe Adhemar opens with an brooding orchestral instrumental followed by trademark Adhemar ivory tickling. The Ian Brown-esque 1934 rages against the current state of world politics and the perils of ignoring  the warnings of history.  Other topics covered on the album include mental health, fake streamers (we see you), a cheating Argentinian, and the toxic binfire that Twitter has become in 2024.  This is a heavy album but one that demands your full attention with your best headphones as you can really hear the production snap, crackle and pop.  Favourite songs include 1934, Oxygen Tank, and The Imposter.  Joe Adhemar is the special guest on my December 2024 episode of the Daft Pom Show and talks about this new (and notable) album as selected by Bandcamp.

Bandcamp: Two Magpie Day | Joe Adhemar

#11 The Stash Collective - The Tonic

Is it funk? jazz? trip hop? acid rock? chillout? reggae? soul?  It's a bit of all and (forgive the cliche) a case where the sum is greater than the parts.  It's pure groovy madness from Al Borg (of Moonlight Parade) and Rowan Chapman on their second album.  My favourite songs here are The Lick, Never Satisfied, and Sunshine (featuring Michelle Luscombe).  But play the whole thing and dig it, Man!  If you want to hear more of the influences then follow Al's Mixcloud podcast called Kaleidoscope.

Bandcamp: The Tonic | The Stash Collective (bandcamp.com)

#10 Scott Lavene - Disneyland In Dagenham

The excellent singer songwriter Scott Lavene released his third album this year.  He has a knack of taking about his past and everyday mundane situations and making it funny and set to very Wonky Pop TM.  There 's a mixture of Ian Dury and Jarvis Cocker humour on display on most songs and there's so many little details to soak up that it rewards repeated listening.  My favourites include Sadly I'm Not Steve McQueen, Disneyland in Dagenham and Debbie.

Social links Linktree

Bandcamp: Disneyland In Dagenham | Scott Lavene (bandcamp.com)

#9 October Drift - Blame The Young

An indie rock band on their third album who I somehow missed until this year.  In fact until writing this blog I thought this was their debut album.  So we've established I'm no authority on the band but they seems to be doing very well without my personal patronage.  Great anthemic rock music.  My favourites are Tyrannosaurus Wreck, Blame The Young, and Wallflower.

#8 Arcade State - Life Is Not Linear

Released under the name Arcade State but the Glasgow band are now known as The Painting. In 2024 emotional rock didn't get more emotional (or more rock) than the Life Is Not Linear album.  The lyrics draw you in and the alt rock comes crashing down on you like a tidal wave like a force of nature that sweeps you up in its path and carries you away.  Powerful stuff indeed and I haven't even mentioned the vocals yet. Have now.  Favourite songs include Nothing But War, Thunderstatement and The Barrens.

Social links Twitter  Bluesky

#7 Bryan's Magic Tears - Smoke and Mirrors

Imagine a French Kasabian covering Dig Your Own Hole and Screamadelica and your in the psychadelic ballpark.  Groovy, hynotic with hints of Jean-Michel Jarre, JAMC, Ride, and The Stone Roses with an acidic house aftertaste. This is the fourth album from Bryan's Magic Tears but it's new to me and the influences mentioned above should excite you to take a chance on this outstanding album. Favourite songs include Stalker, Steam Roller, and Beauty And The Beat.

Bandcamp: Smoke and Mirrors | BRYAN'S MAGIC TEARS

#6 Small Black Arrows - The British Museum

A Welsh Mancunian duo signed to 42's Records have released their brilliant debut album which interspaces the songs an electronic museum currator audio tourguide and cut up technology juxtaposing the ancient with the modern.  (I think that's the first time I've written Juxtaposing - Thanks SFA). The songs are often sad downbeat and beautiful with my standout songs being Voices In The Static, Cherophobia & Trojan Horse.

#5 Hightown Pirates - Welcome To Wilderness Hill

The third album from Simon Mason after his move to Margate continues the Hightown Pirates adventures following on from 2017s Dry & High & 2020s All Of The Above.  Welcome To Wilderness Hill is a snapshot of the state of the UK with dry wit, poetic lyrics, and observations on the state of the country set to the Hightown Pirates brand of swinging and swaggering rock n roll.  There are songs about immigration, post Brexit, angry men, religious intolerance, futility and Simon's personal reflections on his past.  It's a brilliant album which deals with some heavy topics and paints a dark picture of England in the 2020s.  The music is wonderful and the biting lyrics usually lighten the mood with a wicked grin.  My favourite songs are A Winter's Tale, Roses and Dust.

#4 Amelia Coburn - Between The Moon and The Milkman

Amelia's Coburn's debut album was produced by Bill Ryder Jones, who has had a preety good year himself.  This album includes re-recordings of some singles that have appeared over the last four years alongside plenty of new material.  The mixture of folk, pop and rock songs show many facits of Amelia's influences and her wonderful vocals are the main attraction here.   It is a very strong album and I'm finding it hard to pick three favourites as I have seven contenders.   Nodding Dog has a real Nick Drake - Bryter Layter feel to it .  See Saw has a spooky 60's hypnotic spell and Sleepy Town, which is livlier than it suggests showcases Amelia's brilliant songwriting, performance and humour.  And don't just take my word for it, Paul Weller has also picked Between The Moon and The Milkman as one of his favourite albums of the year as well!

#3 The Heavy North - Fire In The Furnace

The Heavy North's live album Fire In The Furnace is the best live album of the decade.  It captures the thrilling sound of a great blues rock band at the top of their game performing a setlist that many larger bands would kill for.  A hometown gig with  choral and orchestral augmentation it elevates things to the next level and the audience of fans can be heard lapping it up and singing along. The band have only released two full studio albums and this 21 track live recording is a magnificent slice of concert history with the strut and swagger of The Rolling Stones embodied in a Twenty First Century Merseyside rock band. They even cover Gimmee Shelter - what more could you ask for?

#2 Moonlight Parade - Stranger Times

Moonlight Parade make what apperas to be effectlessly cool melodic music that sinks into your soul and after a few plays you feel like these songs have been with you all your life.  That's some neat trick, and I'm sure it takes a great deal of effort to create music that sounds effortless.  Every note and sound has it's place and the use of the space in between  gives the songs breathing room and let's the mind wander.  I'm not sure if that makes sense but it's been hard to describe why the experience of playing these songs are so familiar and nostalgic. Stranger Times is the fourth album from the Worthing band and they haven't put a step wrong here.  Get the vinyl from their website link below. Favourite songs include Strange Times, Better Days, and Themes Of The Past.

#1 The Shop Window - Daysdream

It's the third album from The Shop Window and they made it a 16 track double album of Janglepop and Shoegaze which they have dubbed the genre Janglegaze.  With the Shoppies members spread accross the country and Carl and Katt now working on the Shapes Like People album - is this the final release from The Shop Window?  Who can say - either way it's a perfect record and they have dominated my album of the year lists between 2021-2024.  At the time of writing there are deals on the vinyl over on bandcamp.  Favourite songs include Made In Heaven, Miracles, and It's A High.  I've already reviewed the album in detail at the link below if you want a deeper dive, but in summary Daysdream is an amazing record that will stand the test of time.  It's probably the best Janglegaze album in the world...ever.

The Shop Window - Daysdream - Album Review

Album Review

Daysdream

The Shop Window

reviewed by Old Indie Kid

Released date: 3 May 2024 on their own Jangleshop Records

Purchase on CD, vinyl or digital from  Daysdream | The Shop Window (bandcamp.com)

The Shop Window are prolific purveyors of  jangle pop and I'm privileged enough to have had an early listen to their magnificent third album.  They have gone big here returning with a double album and a whopping 16 tracks.  The wisdom/foolishness of releasing a double album in the days of streaming is often one that artists have to grapple with.  Many of their unsigned contemporaries (The Mariners, The Heavy North, Andrew Johnson) have also dropped a double album recently so they are not alone in this endeavour.  The double album idea originated, as many do, whilst Syd and Carl were tucking into the Christmas booze and they even remembered it the next day.  They describe Daysdream as two mini albums showcasing two sides to the band - the traditional upbeat janglepop first movement, followed by the unexpected and newfangled dreamy melancholy janglegaze genre.

I Run opens the album with a chirpy janglepop intro that The Cure on uppers would be proud of.  Carl says he used five different guitars on this track which justifies some of his recent purchases!  The first half of the album has the more familiar sound, but the quality is several notches higher.

Lady Luck calms the tempo with a lush Teenage Fanclub love song vibe.  Carl breaks out the 12 string Guild Starfire guitar here to wonderful effect.  The influence of The Fifth Shoppy Paul "Reevo" Reeves is felt throughout the new album. Reevo joined after the recording of A 4 Letter Word as a member of the live band and is now unleashed by introducing plenty of new instruments throughout this album.

It's A High was the first single from LP3 and should be familiar to all listeners with their finger on the cultural zeitgeist of janglepop.  It's a magical song co-written by Carl and Syd and one of the poppiest singles around. Reevo's saxophone enhances the outro with its unexpected appearance (spoilers).

Another marvellous video created by Darren Stokes  https://www.s8creative.net/

See Another Day With echoes of Waterfall by The Stone Roses, this chilled stoner song is about living your best life and not being held back whilst striving for your dreams.  Presumably this wonderful song ends the first side of the vinyl so time to get up and turn it over already.  Maybe order it on CD if you're lazy.

Lost and Alone  A short song about the power of love without which things would be much darker.   We have the wonderful Kat Mann to thank for keeping Carl in the good mood expressed on this record and she also supplies backing vocals on this song, Blues and Made In Heaven.

Beyond The Stars is a highlight and was written about the disposable quick fix nature of the music industry for those fickle listeners who don't stick around, buy all the albums and write three album reviews for the band. You know who you are! ;-)  The joy of creation is evident on this blinding example of The Shop Windows craft.

Cherry Lemonade  Syd and Carl wrote this and tweaked the original idea in a melancholy direction. The lyrics and music have an early Stone Roses influence which is magic if you can bottle it. It's sweet without being sickly.

Live To Love & Love Your Life is a song that Carl hopes will resonate with his son when he's older and impart some lyrical wisdom.  Reevo's saxophone makes a welcome reappearance at the end.

- Intermission -

And now onto the second side, the highly anticipated janglegaze dreamy side. Carl has mentioned he has some trepidation as to whether the existing fanbase would enjoy their new direction. So, let's see what I thought...squeaky bum time!

Miracles Within seconds the hairs on my arms are standing up as sinister synths swirl and Curesque Disintegration era guitars creep around.  By the chorus my heart melts.  It's a strong opening and then it grows darker and denser - the layered guitar parts are oppressive yet beautiful and at the three-minute mark the drums and bass kick in and the tension is ratcheted up again.  My only quibble is at five minutes it is too short - perhaps you may be lucky enough to catch the full fifteen minutes live wig out. Syd described Miracles as one of his favourite songs in The Shop Window canon.

Blues A recent single with a strong nod and a wink to the OX4 postcode and the legends Ride.  A shoegaze love song to lift your spirits and warm your cockles.  (I just make this stuff up). Marvellous harmonies towards the end of the song which is one of four songs you can already stream ahead of the release date.

Loneliness was written overnight when Carl was suffering a bout of insomnia and he wanted to capture a woozy haunted sound that reflected his sleep deprived state of mind.

Who's In Control? A political song about the shower of shite that have been running the country into the ground and avoiding responsibility for their actions.  Get to the polls!

Monochrome  A song that first appeared on the excellent Indie Citizens Vol 2 compilation album.  It's brilliant but an unusual sound for the Shoppies somewhere between Inspiral Carpets organ psychedelia mixed with the sneery fast paced rock of Guns N Roses.  Welcome to The Jangle!

A World Where We Remain  The second single released from the album deals with the heavy themes of man-made environmental collapse and our collective ability to fuck things up.  The strings elevate the song to a beautiful place and it's a real tearjerker.

Happy Now This song was written about checking in on those around you and checking if they are Happy Now?  They should be - we're all about to get our hands on a magnificent janglepop / janglegaze double album by Maidstone's finest band - The Shop Window.

Made In Heaven Sure it's seven minutes long, but what an epic album closer.  A very personal song of Carl singing to his younger self with a hopeful message that says you can forge your own path.  You are not doomed to repeat the mistakes of your parents and your genes don't define you.  The Ride influence is strong here and it's a janglegaze masterpiece.  I've always enjoyed The Shop Window when they get the chance to jam out.  We are brought back down to Earth with a soft landing thanks to a wonderful instrumental piano, strings and is that a glockenspiel on the outro?  It's one of my favourite songs on the album and one everyone is going to love.

The Shop Window have only gone and done it again - Daysdream is going to blow some fragile little minds wide open.  Where they go from here is anyone's guess but hopefully they will receive overwhelming positive feedback distortion that this album deserves and the band responds with fresh and uninhibited jangly directions.

Time Travelling MoFo - Musical Years

I picked up the nickname of Time Travelling MoFo from Andrew Johnson (17th President of the United States) and have used this title to record a mix of my favourite music from each year between 1963 and 2062. The genres of music depend on the year you can hear all sorts within these mixes from pop, rock, psychadelic, reggae, rap, new wave, dance, flip flop hop, or dubzebra revival.  I believe there is always good music in any year if you're prepared to search for it within this timeframe.  Most mixes are around the 2 hour mark and I try not to repeate artists in the same year.  I will update this blog with links to all my shows as they appear online.

Albums of 2023

2023 has been another bumper year for albums on the independent scene.  I've had to make some hard decisions to cull the list to just 30 and fear I've probably forgotten a few that could have made it.  The order is entirely subjective etc etc. But all albums on this list are worth exploring if any of my short reviews piques your interest.  I've included a Spotify playlist with a tune from each album to play whilst you browse through my ramblings.  I've included links to purchase the albums where I found them and twitter handles (where they still exist) to engage with the artists and keep tabs on their future releases and gigs. Thanks to all the artists featured here for keeping me entertained and making the new music scene fresh and lively.

A few vinyls from my album list that have already arrived Down Under

#30 Lulu - Hey Calamity

Dave Thomas from South Australia has been very prolific in 2023 and released two albums this year in quick succession following from his debut in 2022.  Urbania came out in October following Lulu's release in April 2023.  A mixture of Shoegaze and Dreampop with a nod to the early records of The Cure which deserves the attention of your best headphones.  A couple of songs feature the vocals of Emily Thomas including one of my highlights Soft Illusion.

Favourite songs: Soft Illusion & Saving Grace

Bandcamp: https://heycalamity.bandcamp.com/album/lulu

#29 Jake Davey - You Are What You're Spoonfed

Jake Davey's second album You Are What You're Spoonfed offers the listener plenty of wonderful songs that build up and capture your heart.  Just listen to the totally underated music on Like Dynamite and Grind Our Bones for that laidback Seventies groove.

Favourite songs: Like Dynamite & Grind Our Bones

#28 As The Crow Flies - Kevin Robertson

Kevin Robertson has followed up his excellent 2022 album Teaspoon of Time with another fine collection of melodic jangly pop with Magic Spells Abound. If you like the Cosmic Rough Riders this is in a similar vein. Kevin is also a member of Aberdeen band The Vapour Trails who have three albums in their catalogue.

Favourite songs: Sunset & As The Crow Flies

#27 Twenty-First Century Times - Joe Astley

Released in January 2023 the debut album from Joe Astley collects four of his best singles released over the last few years alongside new material full of social commentary on the state of the nation. There’s a doff of the flat cap to Springsteen, Dylan, Shane MacGowan and Billy Joel.  The sublime Anthem For The North is still the centrepiece and even gets a reprise here.

Favourite songs: Anthem For The North & The Battle of Wigan Lane

#26 Get On The End Of It! - Laurie Wright

A loud raucous rock n roll debut album from London’s premier busking mod punk. This is one huge redemptive riot of an LP from one of the new music scene’s brightest stars who almost burnt out but survived and used that to fuel his fire. If you’ve not heard of him then Laurie Wright is an artist you should discover today.

Favourite songs: Butter Side Up Boy & Wings Of Gold And Platinum

#25 Between The Lies - MantraRay

This second album has another great selection of indie rock and pop tunes on it.  Topics include war, family, love, heartbreak and holidays in the Sun. Their self production has improved in leaps and bounds and I’ve written up a track by track review which can be found here oldindiekid.blogspot.com mantraray-between-lies-album-review

Favourite songs: My Broken Heart & Just Like The Sun

#24 Woke Up - Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson’s Wake Up is in his own words “10th Generation, bargain basement, white man blues” with funky electro noodling.  This is ten top examples of the new crossover genre Big Beat Blues with a mixture of poignant and humorous self deprecating lyrics.  Cheer up Andy! Might never happen.

Favourite songs: Big Bad Dose Of You & 44 More

#23 Mode - Mode

From Adelaide, South Australia comes this five piece power pop Britpop band who self-released their debut album on vinyl in March.  Mode mix the sounds of the Sixties and the Nineties with a New Wave influence and create some perfect pop music.  If you enjoy their labelmates Cigarillo then you should check out Mode who also share singer-songwriter and guitarist Marc Garnett.  This album isn't available on Spotify so head to bandcamp to hear and purchase it.

Favourite songs: Hold On To Yesterday & Rundle Mall

#22 The Long Way - Leigh Thomas

An awesome album of thunderous Aussie rock.  Big anthems, sing along choruses, great lyrics and melodic hooks to snare your interest.  The Leigh Thomas debut album contains 3 previous singles and seven spanking new tracks including the bombastic Underground and my favourite the eco-warrior album closer Kids of Tomorrow. The Long Way album is a full face blast of classic contemporary guitar music from a talented singer songwriter and purveyor of total tunes.

Favourite songs: Kids Of Tomorrow & Higher Low

#21 Don'ts And Dos - The Radio Field

Lars from Subtafuge formed a side project in Dussledorf during the lockdown which morphed into a fully fledged band playing breezey jangle pop.  This is their debut album and its bloody great.

Favourite songs: Other One (featuring Phantom Handshakes) & Love

#20 The Only Light In This Tunnel Is The Oncoming Train - Afflecks Palace

Hazy jangle Pop introduced by a buzzing bee. Eighteen months after the excellent debut album, this second album from Afflecks Palace deals up another big batch of baggy tunes that I have personally road tested on the dance floor.

Favourite songs: Wide Eyes On The Night Bus & I’m So Glad You’re On Ecstasy

#19 Unmask The Circus - Mark Sharp & The Bicycle Thieves

Hailing from the musical hotbed of West Lothian, Mark Sharp and The Bicycle Thieves released their wonderful debut album Unmask The Circus in August 2023 and it is a strong collection of great hooky indie pop and rock songs.

Favourite songs: All That Northern Soul & Sink Or Swim

#18 Counting To Three - Portable Radio

Manchester’s Portable Radio mix the Pop sensibilities of Supergrass with the harmonies of The Beach Boys in a joyful blast of pop hedonism drunk on Chipper Juice.

Favourite songs: I Feel Like A Dog & Good News

#17 Here We Are - Apollo Junction

The Leeds band’s third album contains ten prime cuts of well produced 80s influenced indie rock anthems.  There are moments which sound like The Joshua Tree with synths and everything is turned up to eleven. Each song has that lighters in the air, sing along, feel good factor.

Favourite songs: History & By The River

#16 Pictures Of You: A Compilation of Covers of Songs by the Cure - Various Artists

With 45 cover versions of one of my favourite artists I couldn't lose on this mental health charity indie compilation.  I've picked out three favourites from artists I know but the whole album is brilliant.

Favourite songs: In Your House by dunkie, The Kiss by Pocket Lint, Just Like The Cure by Sean Buckley

#15 False Starts, Open Endings - Katie MF

Katie MF is a London based artist with a punk ethos and a bucketful of talent. The opening song Lucky MF tells the story of her near death accident that nearly finished her off and her reactions to this traumatic experience. Katie brings infectious humour and anger as her songs take on the Tories, the patriarchy, sexism, and an errent piece of metal trying to take her fucking head off.

Favourite songs: Lucky MF & Confidence Crisis

#14 Quasars and Fluff - Blokeacola

Blokeacola’s double album is well worth exploring.  Inspired by the Beatles White album there are a variety of styles on this latest opus. His brilliant lyrics are always a pleasure to listen to and there is a strong Beck influence on many of the acoustic songs that adorn Quasars and Fluff. The difficulty here was picking highlights as each song you hear quickly becomes a new favourite. Not yet on Spotify so head to Bandcamp if you want a copy on CD on a digital download.

Favourite songs: Carrion & Troublesome Lie

#13 Fires In The Night - 3 Little Wolves 🐺🐺🐺

It’s been a real pleasure seeing how 3 Little Wolves have grown from their first official release in 2021 until the release of their debut album two years later. They have been busy in the transfer market and tinkering with formations but they keep improving.  Really excited for their next album but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.  Fires In The Night contains about seven singles and many of them re-recorded to beef up the original sound with extra layers of guitar and keyboard.

Favourite songs: Darkside & My House

#12 Night and Day - Dub Shepherds

A French based reggae outfit I recently discovered via the Keep Yourself Nice podcast.  They play dub reggae and it feels like a lost Seventies classic with great songwriting and chilled Island grooves.

Favourite songs: Rebel Souls & Ain’t Coming Back

#11 HOOPLA - Super 8

Paul ‘Trip’ Ryan mostly records under the Super 8 name but he always has a few side projects on the go. Hoopla is a brilliant album a couple of years in the making and filled with twelve gorgeous indie songs. The influences include The Beatles, The Smiths, Teenage Fanclub, The La’s and Shack to name a few. I’ve played half of the songs here on my Daftpom podcasts and love this album.

Favourite songs:  Our Town & Moments In Time

#10 The Synesthete - Joe Adhemar

The album was released in February 2023 on Bandcamp and has since appeared as a series of EPs on streaming sites with a full extra b-sides thrown in.  Another top collection of songs with headphone ear popping production from one of the new music scenes most thought provoking songwriters. The topics covered on Joe’s sixth album of the decade include calling for the youth to rebel, blocking internet trolls, Stranger Things, Tory incompetence and corruption, alongside more personal songs. This is a more guitar oriented album than the previous About The Soul thanks to collaborator and axeman Jim Sanger.

Favourite songs: Hopper (ft Skylu) & Revolution By Hashtag

#9 Four Sides Of The Circle - The Mariners

Nottingham’s finest 60s throwbacks The Mariners have been very prolific this year. As well as releasing a Christmas CD they released their third album and a double one at that. The recurring theme’s are the passing of time, memories of the past and the changing of the seasons. There are too many songs to do it justice in this short review.  But give it a listen and let The Mariners guide you on a journey once around the sun and up the garden path for a pot of tea and some lawn maintenance. Marvellous stuff!

Favourite songs: Autumn Will Come Soon & Bathley Street

#8  Our Fear Is Their Power -  The Shed Project

The Shed Project second album is a brilliant album commenting on the state of the world.  Themes tackled include government corruption, the decline of Britains cities, the scourge of addiction and industry charlatans (not Tim Burgess & friends).

Favourite songs: Naughty & Ghost Town

#7 Your Cuckoo - Teenage Waitress

Southampton’s Daniel Ash is a talented songwriter and has created a fantastic second album with many songs reminiscing on youth and relationships. Great use of sound effects as alarm clocks, car indicators, crashing waves, seagulls and jangling keys all add to the ambience.

Favourite songs: Grey Sky & Back Seat

#6 Little Pictures Without Sound - SENSES

The debut album by SENSES has been a long time coming.  The band have been playing together since they teenagers but life mishaps kept getting in the way of releasing their debut album. Senses dusted off the decade-old recordings during the lockdown and decided to finish what they started. Little Pictures Without Sound was finally released on 42 Records in April 2023 to widespread acclaim. But when the music’s this good it’s worth waiting for.

Favourite songs: Drop Your Arms & Let Me In

#5 Standard Patter - Fire Up The Sun

ArrCee & MC Burnoot are baldy white Scottish rappers who just don’t give a fuck. They ain’t in it for the money because they realise there isn’t any but it keeps them off the streets. After a number of EPs they have expanded to a debut album with ten quality well produced tunes, social commentary and very dry dark humour. There are guest spots for MC Bongo and Lewca as collaborators in the madness. I’ve been listening to this album regularly since its release in May 2023.  Are you listening? Cause you fuckin should be!

Favourite songs: Life Logistics & Last Orders

#4 Boombap for Boomers - Lewca

Fire Up The Sun return the favour by appearing on Lewca’s album to rip the piss out of him on the first track. Lewca and S.O.A.P. (DJ Son Of A Pitch) return with a blinding album of tunes in a variety of genres that refuse to be pigeonholed.  Lewca’s lyrics are humorous and poignant and really resonate with me as a Forty-Nothing Dad. Guest spots for OrangeG, Fayabraz, Mick Swagger and Dancehall Legend Elephant Man! I reviewed the album in more detail on my blog article below…

Favourite songs: Roundabout & Monday Morning

#3 Delta Shakedown - The Heavy North

Blues n Soul n Rock n Roll is what we’ve come to expect from Merseyside’s Twelve Legged Groove Machine and this second album delivers in spades. You’ll be forgiven for mistaking the title song Delta Shakedown as a lost classic by The Doors. Next come the three singles that preceded the album each catchier than the last. When they slow the tempo they demonstrate their musical maturity and you are left in no doubt that you listening to a classic rock band at the heading for the peak of their powers.

Favourite songs: Delta Shakedown & Where Are You Now?

#2 Something About This Place - Thrillhouse

This is the long awaited Thrillhouse debut album - four years after the Brighton band started releasing dance tinged indie singles.  For the album they have taken a different direction with guitars to the fore and a country rock tinge that nods at The War On Drugs, Bruce Springsteen and Dire Straits.  The meloncholy songwriting is brilliant and reminisces about childhood memories, growing up and the passing of time.  They used Kickstarter to fund their album's physical release on CD and Vinyl.  Not sure if any copies remain but you can ask them if you missed out. They talk themselves down but they should be bigged up because  Something About This Place is a triumph and a timeless record I can see myself enjoying for years.

Favourite song: So Far From Where I Started From & Butch Reilly

#1 Demons - Brownbear

What else could it be?  An absolute classic album from the band from Ayeshire.  This second album arrived five years after 2018's debut album What Is Home?  Hopefully we won't have to wait half a decade for the follow up.  Ten quality songs largely dealing with the ups and downs of relationships that pulls at your heartstrings, makes you want to dance, cry and sing along.  This is all killer no filler territory and picking favourites from this album is very hard.  There are no wrong answers!  The music is influenced by acoustic indie, pop, northern soul, reggae and rock.  There are less than 10 copies remaining on red vinyl if you hurry you might nab one for your record collection.

Favourite songs: Unity & Telling Stories
